TwitchCon 2019 San Diego

Today at 11am Twitch sent out the TwitchCon 2019 dates and location email announcing that the location this year will be in San Diego at the San Diego Convention Center. TwitchCon’s date this year will be September 27th through the 29th. According to the email: “TwitchCon 2019 will make TwitchCon 2016 look like an opening act.” Time will tell.

I found the funniest part of the email to be the part where it makes the statement, “San Diego’s Gaslamp district…a lively neighborhood with affordable hotels”. Apparently we either have massively different opinions on the word “affordable” or Twitch has forgotten that their customer base is mostly teens and young adults who are not filthy rich. I also have to mention that San Diego is terrible for conventions, look at the cluster fuck of crowds and traffic during ComicCon each year. Anyone who has attended knows the hotel booking frustration and ridiculously hiked up rates. Since I remain anonymous I’ll just say that I may or may not have lived or live in Southern California. In Southern California nothing but the tacos are affordable and widely available. And the tacos are not even made by Californians, ha!

…”we have massively different opinions on the meaning of affordable”

“Oh cmon Labe, it’s a major event in the gaming /tech industry, surely you’re exaggerating the pricing and availability of hotel rooms for TwitchCon 2019? I have fat LOL for you in my pocket. Immediately upon receiving the email at 11:00am I opened up the SERP six pack and proceeded to attempt to book a room for the weekend of TwitchCon 2019, Sept 27-30th (the event ends on the 29th). This was Expedia’s results…

No Rooms available

I hadn’t even typed filters at this point. Nothing available on Expedia at all. So I went to the next link, same dates…

$800 for 3 days…not at a hotel, but an apartment building that is renting out rooms. I called. No fresh towels daily. Nobody knows the last cleaning date of the rooms. Eww. Some people live in the apartments and some are just staying a few nights. Lots of transients. No thanks. So I continued my search…

$467 for 3 nights! That sounds reasonable! Oh wait…It’s at the Gaslamp Quarters Hotel. Have you been there before? I have. It reminds me of the creepy part of the 80’s. If I was a date, I would hate the person that brought me to this shit hole. The entire building smells like a large combination of old smells, which isn’t pleasant. It is worse than a Motel 6. Think you’re bringing back a hot TwitchCon babe back to your spot after a couple Metroid Blaster shots? Not happening here. Honestly you couldn’t pay me to stay. Here is a picture below:

My worst nightmares start in rooms that look like this…

So I continued my search…

No thanks.

$756 for 3 nights at the StayPineapple Hotel Z..It can’t be that bad right? With a stupendous name like StayPineApple Hotel Z it sounds like a slice of heaven right? No folks. This motel is another dreary place…read the reviews… reeks of cigarette smoke, loud rowdy neighbors at night, and my least favorite motel amenity…hair, yes hair…in the rooms. It is nightmarish nasty. Another location you couldn’t pay me to stay at. So I continued my search…

$268 per night for 3 nights= $804…pricey…at the oh wait, it’s Hotels.com trying to trick me into the Alfred Apartments again.

Either I hack into the system and book myself a room at a stellar hotel…or the best bet is a crappy AirBnB.
